Technology Overview

What is Digital Signage?

A network of 1 or more screens at 1 or more locations, displaying high impact moving adverts, centrally controlled over the internet or LAN.

Digital signage is a combination of hardware and software:

  • Hardware:

The digital signage displays can be LCD or Plasma screens, electronic billboards, projection screens and projectors, scrolling display boards and others, that are controlled mostly by a computer (or sometimes other electronic devices). The content and displayed information is stored on a local Player computer and can be locally or remotely controlled in different ways via hardware (manager computer, timer, switcher, and more) and software.
  • Software:

The software for digital signage generally consists of Player software (located on the local player computer to which the digital display is connected) and the Manger software (located on the player computer or on a manager computer – via LAN or broadband internet connection). The Manager software controls the content - adverts, loops, banners and schedule. The player software communicates via LAN or broadband internet connection at preset times for any updates and or changes in the content and schedule.

Software - How it works

The screens are connected to a Player PC (a normal Windows PC dedicated to running our Digital Signage Player software) which stores the content that will be played.

The Player PC is connected via broadband to a Manager PC which is used to define the content (adverts and order of play) that will be played on each Player PC.

The connection between the Player PC and the Manager PC uses a broadband internet connection (and an FTP site that your ISP can easily assist you with). Local management can be done over a LAN.

The Player PC checks on the FTP site at pre-determined hourly intervals & downloads new content if found.
